Wimbledon 2022 latest, Krejcikova pays tribute to inspiration Novotna after win

Barbora Krejcikova will attempt to emulate her late mentor and friend Jana Novotna when she faces Jasmine Paolini in the women's singles final at Wimbledon on Saturday.

Krejcikova beat Elena Rybakina 3-6 6-3 6-4 to reach her first Wimbledon final, extending her head-to-head record against the Kazakh to 3-0

Krejcikova, who was born in 1995, the year after Novotna won Wimbledon, said she was inspired by the Czech legend's fighting spirit and determination.

"She was an amazing player and an even better person," Krejcikova said. "She always believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself. She taught me to never give up and to always fight for my dreams."

Novotna died of cancer in 2017 at the age of 49. She won Wimbledon in 1998, beating Nathalie Tauziat in the final. She also won 16 other WTA singles titles and four Grand Slam women's doubles titles.

Krejcikova said she would be thinking of Novotna when she takes to the court on Saturday. "I know she'll be watching over me," she said.
